[Blindapple] Strategy or RPG games?

Yes, I realize this is a very old post, but I didn't see any reply. I got
an Avalon Hill game working with the A2 emulator, but I'm not sure if it
would talk or not. You have a few problems with most commercial games, at
least in my experience. First, they are still under copyright, so there is
a slight legal concern. It's not as if they'll sue you, but still, keep in
mind that in most cases, they haven't officially released the games as
freeware or otherwise. Second, most have some form of disk protection,
weird DOS, etc, making them impossible to boot and run normally with
Textalker. Of course a lot of them have been cracked, but it's still not
unusual to have them not catalog or otherwise run like a standard disk.
Finally, even though they are mostly text, they use the graphics modes for
map drawings, logos, etc and use various tricks to hide the Applesoft
programs, like compiling them. Therefore, you usually end up with one big
program to brun which somehow doesn't work with Textalker. A recent example
is Taipan. It's one big binary file and should work as it's turn-based and
should be mostly text, but when I brun it, I get silence. The A2 plain text
emulator is better for those games. If you're really interested in playing
those old games, look for early PC versions. I've found that old MS-DOS
games actually talk better and usually don't seem to have quite as much copy
protection. You can try an Avalon Hill game under the disks/emulators
section of Jayson's site which I tried and got to work with A2 and let us
know how far you get.

There are many available in the various FTP archives, by companies like Avalon Hill, SSG, and SSI. I ask because a lot of these had text-based UI, and seem as if they could be playable. Nothing against some of the games we already have, but variety is a wonderful thing.
